Your First Superyacht Experience? Here Is What You Need to Know

Are you about to charter a superyacht for the first time, or perhaps you are invited on board a luxurious yacht? Here is a guide to the essential rules and etiquette that define the world of superyachts. With these simple guidelines, you will know what to do and what to avoid, ensuring that your time on board is as enjoyable and seamless as possible.

Things to Do Things to Do

Listen to the Safety Briefing

Before your cruise begins, the very first step is to listen carefully to the safety briefing. Even if your stay on board is short, this is essential. It is not only important for your wellbeing, but also a legal obligation for the captain and crew.

Treat the Yacht Like Your Own Home

The crew and the owner want you to feel completely at ease on board. To achieve that, it is important to treat the yacht with the same care and respect as you would your own home.

Allow Time for Service

Behind every pristine yacht lies a great deal of organization, both visible and behind the scenes. To keep the yacht spotless, the crew must carry out daily tasks such as cleaning cabins, laundry, and general housekeeping. Usually, they take care of these while you are ashore exploring, but if this is not possible, please allow them the necessary time while you are on board

Communicate with the Crew

Clear communication is key to a smooth charter. Share your wishes with the captain, whether it is about stops you would like to make, itinerary changes, or activities on board. Keep in mind that yachts require preparation time for anchoring, docking, or launching water toys, so it is best to discuss your plans with the captain to confirm what is feasible.

Regarding meals, if you wish to enjoy a late-night dinner after an evening ashore, or if you would like to host a last-minute cocktail party with guests on board, let the crew know as early as possible so they can prepare to deliver the best experience.

Traveling with Pets

If you would like to bring your pet on board, please inform Nauty Yachty in advance to ensure that the yacht you select is pet friendly.

The Barefoot Rule

On most yachts, shoes are not allowed on board. High heels can damage teak decks, and soles may leave marks. Usually, you will find a basket at the entrance where you can leave your shoes.

Cabin Allocation

To avoid misunderstandings during check-in, it is recommended that the primary charterer assigns cabins in advance. Not all yacht cabins are identical: some are larger, some have twin beds instead of doubles, and their positions on the yacht differ. Consult one of our agents for guidance to ensure the most pleasant arrangement for your family, friends, or colleagues.

Think About Luggage

Space is always limited on yachts. Soft luggage is highly recommended instead of hard suitcases, as it can be easily folded and stowed away once empty.

Gratuities

As in the hospitality industry, it is customary to leave a gratuity for the crew, based on your overall satisfaction with your experience. The suggested amount is usually between 5% and 15% of the charter fee.

Things Not to Do Things Not to Do

Illegal Activities Do Not Engage in Illegal Activities

Although being at sea may feel like freedom, the law still applies. Beyond drug restrictions, there are many other regulations concerning anchoring zones, the use of water toys, and the maximum number of passengers allowed depending on the yacht's certification. Yachts operate under zero tolerance: engaging in illegal activity can result in the immediate loss of the yacht's license. Harassment of a crew member is also taken very seriously; the captain has the right to disembark the person involved and even terminate the charter immediately.

Baby Do Not Treat the Crew as Babysitters

Bringing children on board is absolutely welcome, but please remember that the crew are not babysitters. They are busy managing the yacht and cannot always supervise children, so it is advisable to keep an eye on them yourself or bring a nanny if needed.

Privacy Respect the Crew's Privacy

The crew lives on board with you, but they also have the right to their own private space. Guests are not permitted in crew quarters, and it is generally inappropriate to invite crew members ashore. The only exception may be the captain, whom you may invite for dinner if you wish - but if they decline, please understand they also have a heavy administrative workload beyond navigation.

No Smoking Respect Smoking Areas

On most yachts, smoking indoors is prohibited. Designated smoking areas are available on the exterior decks. Please follow the crew's guidance.

One Last Thing One Last Thing

Do not try to resolve problems yourself. If you encounter any issue with a crew member or service on board, let us handle it for you. At Nauty Yachty, our agents are in daily contact with the captain to ensure everything runs smoothly. They are best placed to address any situation and guarantee that your charter experience remains exceptional.
